Abstract

Summary The mining industry is sensitive to various external factors, particularly political, economic, and environmental ones. This study aims to assess the risk factors affecting the performance of Ohaf Mining Company in the Red Sea State. A structured, self-administered questionnaire was distributed to 30 employees and managers at the company to evaluate how changes in the political environment, such as instability, economic factors like commodity price volatility, environmental factors like regulatory compliance and resource depletion, as well as occupational health and safety risks (chemical, physical, mechanical, electrical), influence mining operations, employee safety, and overall profitability. The study explores the relationship between these external variables and the key performance indicators of the mining company, including productivity, revenue generation, and employee retention. A cross-sectional descriptive study design was used to assess the risk factors affecting the performance of Ohaf Mining Company. Data was collected through a structured questionnaire distributed to 30 employees and managers at the company. The questionnaire was designed to include insights on the impact of political, economic, and environmental risks on key performance indicators, and chemical, mechanical, and electrical hazards were evaluated through assessment models, including productivity, revenue, employee retention, and operational continuity. Responses were quantitatively analyzed to identify trends and relationships between external risk factors and the company's performance. Qualitative insights were also gathered from open-ended questions to provide additional perspectives on specific challenges faced by the company and potential mitigation strategies. Descriptive statistics were used to summarize the results, and inferential statistics were applied to evaluate the significance of the relationships between risk factors and performance outcomes. The study found that 70% of participants believe that political instability has a direct negative impact on operational continuity, as mining activities stop or are disrupted v during periods of unrest. Economic factors, especially fluctuations in global commodity prices, significantly affect the company’s revenue and profitability, as well as its ability to invest in new equipment and technologies. Additionally, environmental risks, including regulatory changes and resource sustainability issues, have increased operating costs and imposed stricter compliance measures, while occupational health and safety risks, such as diseases and accidents, disrupt staff and workers, leading to reduced productivity. The findings indicate that political instability, economic volatility, environmental challenges, and chemical, electrical, mechanical, and physical risks have significant impacts on the company's performance. It is essential for management to implement strategies to mitigate these external pressures, such as enhancing operational resilience, developing strong relationships with the local community, and adopting sustainable mining practices. Policymakers should also consider creating a more stable regulatory environment to support the mining industry, which is critical for economic growth, job creation, and development in the Red Sea State.
