Abstract
Abstract
Project Title: Studying the Impact of Groundwater on the Engineering Properties and
Stability of Soil (Case Study: Al-Gadawab Area – Berber)
Abstract:
This study investigates the impact of groundwater level fluctuations on the physical
and mechanical properties of soil and its subsequent effect on the stability of
engineering structures. The research follows an experimental approach, comparing
two soil samples collected from the "Al-Gadawab" area in River Nile State: one in
its dry state and the other in a moisture-saturated state.
A comprehensive series of laboratory tests were conducted, including Sieve
Analysis, Atterberg Limits, and the Standard Proctor Test, alongside the Direct Shear
Test to determine cohesion (C) and the angle of internal friction (ᴓ). The results
revealed a significant disparity in soil behavior; high moisture content led to a
complete loss of plasticity in the wet sample and a shift in the distribution of fine
particles. Furthermore, a decrease in shear strength and bearing capacity was
observed with increased water content. The study concludes with several technical
recommendations, most notably the necessity of designing effective dewatering
systems and utilizing chemical stabilizers to enhance soil stability in areas with high
groundwater levels.
