Abstract
Abstract :
This study investigates the effect of using iron shavings in concrete as an
additive by weight of cement or as a partial replacement of sand, with the aim
of improving concrete properties and utilizing industrial waste. Concrete
mixes were prepared with different percentages of iron shavings (10%, 20%,
and 30%), in addition to sand replacement up to 50%, and compared with a
reference mix through standard tests, including compressive strength, slump,
density, and water absorption at 7, 14, and 28 days.
The results showed that adding iron shavings at moderate levels (10%–20%)
improves workability, increases density, and reduces water absorption,
indicating a better and more compact internal structure. It also enhances early
age compressive strength. However, higher percentages (30% or high sand
replacement) reduce performance due to increased voids and poor uniformity
of the mix.
The study concludes that the optimum percentage of iron shavings is between
10% and 20% by weight of cement, as it provides a good balance between
strength and physical properties. It is recommended to use these percentages
in practical applications, while further studies are needed to evaluate long
term performance, especially durability and corrosion resistance. The use of
iron shavings also supports sustainable construction by recycling industrial
waste and reducing costs.
