Abstract

Abstract: This research dealt with a comprehensive definition of the types of support walls and their importance, and study of the types of concrete supporting walls. We talked about the types of nonـretaining walls with their various components and the appropriate places for their use. Then we identified the types of retaining walls that do not contain concrete and iron in their components. The materials used in those walls and the methods of their construction were mentioned. The types of problems that can occur to the supporting walls have been mentioned. And the criteria for which the walls must be examined. The research dealt with the most important part, whish the method of draining water behind the retaining walls, where the drainage works to preserve those walls and get rid of the pressure that causes rain water or other sources of water to collect behind and under the walls. Some general considerations when designing retaining walls were mentioned, and the types of forces acting on the prevailing walls were known. The loads that are supported by the wall were studied to calculate the stresses resulting from that attribution, and then the wall was designed according to the steps of the British code, which includes the design of the balance in terms of resistance to slip and rotation.
