Abstract
Abstract
This project aims to develop an integrated engineering strategy for the
rehabilitation and maintenance of the railway line in the (Atbara –
Barbar) sector in the Republic of Sudan, with the purpose of enhancing
its operational efficiency and ensuring the highest standards of railway
transport safety. The research adopted an approach based on the
integration of four fundamental methods; it began with the desk method
to review theoretical studies and the construction history of the facility.
Descriptive data about the sector and its components were obtained
from the Sudan Railways Corporation in Atbara, along with a
comprehensive understanding of the mechanisms and manufacturing
processes from the tile factory, all under the supervision of managers and
supervisors. Then, the field method was used to diagnose current
challenges represented by the deterioration of rails and old fishplates,
and the reduction of the design speed to 60 km/h, as observed by station
inspectors and workers.Starting with the analytical approach based on
the results of laboratory tests on the track soil (such as California Bearing
Ratio CBR and dry density) to ensure the stability of the embankments
and resistance to environmental effects like sand encroachment and
floods, leading to the applied solutions approach that provided the
necessary engineering treatments. The project concluded with a set of
essential recommendations, most notably the need for the full
replacement of light rails (50 and 75 pounds) with heavier ones of the
(UIC 60) type, adopting the continuous welding (CWR) technology to
reduce vibrations, replacing wooden sleepers with prestressed concrete
ones, while emphasizing the updating of turnouts with flexible systems
and physically marking the railway corridor to deter encroachments and
secure the track in the future
