Abstract :
This paper presents the design and implementation of an intelligent control
system for electrical power networks using artificial intelligence techniques, with
a case study on the Shendi 220/110 kV substation in Sudan. The study is
motivated by critical challenges facing the national grid, including load instability,
aging infrastructure, limited generation capacity, and the absence of predictive
monitoring systems. To address these issues, a data-driven framework is
proposed to enhance operational efficiency, reliability, and resilience of the
power system.
The proposed methodology utilizes real operational data acquired from the
SCADA system, incorporating key electrical parameters such as active power,
current, voltage, and reactive power. Data preprocessing techniques, including
statistical normalization and outlier removal, are applied to ensure data quality
and consistency. A deep learning model based on Long Short-Term Memory
(LSTM) networks is developed to perform short-term load forecasting using a
multivariate time-series approach. The model is trained and validated using
standard performance metrics, including Root Mean Square Error (RMSE), Mean
Absolute Error (MAE), and the coefficient of determination (R²).
In addition, an intelligent control strategy based on threshold logic is integrated
with the forecasting model to enable real-time decision-making for load
distribution and automated load shedding. The system dynamically manages the
operation of parallel transformers and prioritizes critical loads to prevent system
collapse under overload conditions.
Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed model achieves high predictive
accuracy, with an R² value of 0.9824 and low error margins, confirming its
vii
effectiveness in capturing nonlinear load patterns. Furthermore, the integrated
control mechanism significantly improves system stability, reduces thermal stress
on transformers, and minimizes the risk of blackout events.
The findings indicate that the integration of deep learning techniques with
conventional control systems provides a robust and scalable solution for
modernizing power networks. This approach facilitates the transition toward
smart grid architectures capable of predictive operation and adaptive control.
Future work recommends extending the model using hybrid architectures (e.g.,
CNN-LSTM), upgrading measurement infrastructure, and incorporating
renewable energy sources to further enhance system performance and
sustainability.
